Miami a "Hit with fencers"

LOCAL ROUNDUP
Fencers say they liked Miami so much they want to return in '10
Fort Lauderdale's Bill Becker didn't capture the title during the final day of the 2007 United State Fencing Association Summer Nationals at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Sunday.
But to everyone involved, he's still a big winner.
A veteran fencer, Becker helped bring the event to Miami. Once it got here, he enlisted the help of his South Florida Fencing Club and his family to help set up and operate the 10-day tourney.
Always the competitor, Becker was not pleased with his fifth-place finish in the men's Veteran 40-plus Sabre. But he was elated with the reaction of the competitors and fans.
''It went incredibly well,'' Becker said. ``It made it tougher trying to run things and compete at the same time, but everyone was very happy with the event.''
The tournament was so successful that Christine Simpson, USFA's associate executive director, has already asked the Miami-Dade Sports Commission to bid for the 2010 event. Next year's tournament is scheduled for San Jose, Calif.
''We had a lot of people during the 10 days tell us they really want to bring another national tournament back here,'' she said. ``We had an overwhelmingly positive response from the attendees. We had 3,380 athletes and probably brought in close to 20,000 people for the event, so it has a big local impact.''
The tournament featured competition in 84 events from youth and adults to wheelchair, veterans and team competition.
Sunday's 40-plus Sabre championship match saw a rally from Steven Heck of Washington, who overtook San Diego's Josh Runyan for the title 10-9.
In the women's Veteran 40-plus Epee, Houston's Suzanne Simpson won her third title of the year, defeating Louise Leighton of Indiana.
In the women's 60-plus Epee, another Texan, Dianne Kallus of Austin, won her third medal of the tournament and second gold.
Kallus also earned a spot on the U.S. world championship team, which will compete this September in Sydney, Australia.

Josh, Barry and Jeff, Thank you for Years of Sacrifice.

As a parent of a "Silver team fencer", I just wanted to take a second to thank Josh Barry and Jeff for all they have done for windy city fencing in general and for us personally.

It is a simple fact that without them, Windy City Fencing would never have been started. What started as 3 guys looking for an outlet to continue their love of fencing, began first as a class, (Thanks to Neal at Menomonee) has grown into one of the dominant Epee clubs in the nation.

All three of them have shown a consistent dedication and great empathy towards the kids. As a parent, it's wonderful to watch someone really "Be there" for your child. To give them a
"High-Five" after a victory, and talk them down after a crushing loss.

They each come to practices with a great attitude, and a sincere love of the sport that’s contagious. Lane has greatly benefited by being a part of the Windy City team. At the same time that his skills have grown, he has gained additional self-confidence, and bonded with some wonderful children. Ilene and I have also been fortunate to make some good friends as well.

Tsanko Hantov is going to do a fantastic job continuing the legacy left by, Barry, Jeff and Josh.
He has really put his heart into training the teams to be competitive on the national stage.
With the help of Boris, and Assistant coaches Henry, Kevin, I’m confident about Windy City’s future.

Thanks again to Josh, Barry and Jeff.

Sincerely
Larry Lubell

All,

Four years ago Barry, Jeff, and I started teaching a fencing class at the Menomonee Club one night a week just for fun. Little did we know that it would turn into the Club we all know today. Over the last four years, Windy City Fencing has grown to over 150 students at four locations, we now have four coaches (Henry, Kevin, Boris and Tsanko) and at last count over twenty national qualifiers for the 2007 National Championships this summer! We are extremely proud of what we have started and will always cherish the friendships we have made with all of you and all of our students over the past four years. We also want to take this moment to thank each of you for all of your many contributions to the Club because it never would have been possible without your help.

While the growth of Windy City Fencing has been phenomenal, it has been extremely difficult for Barry, Jeff and I to balance the increased time committment with our personal lives. Additionally, given our responsibilities outside of fencing, we have really struggled to give the Club the attention it needs to become one of the premier Epee programs in the United States. As such, we have spent the last year working with many of you as well as the Menomonee Club on a transition plan that will continue the great momentum we have started.

It is my pleasure to announce that as of April 1st, we have officially transitioned ownership of Windy City Fencing to Tsanko Hantov. As many of you know, Tsanko has been with us from nearly the beginning of the Club and his passion and enthusiasm for coaching is one of the main reasons the Club has grown so fast. While Tsanko is relatively new to the US, he has picked up the business side of the Club very quickly and his passion for his students and the sport will serve him well as the new owner of Windy City Fencing. Over the last two months, he has worked with the Menomonee Club to institute some great changes for the Club, which he will share with you in a few weeks at the next parents meeting he is scheduling. A few highlights include:

-The first ever Windy City Fencing/Menomonee Club fencing Camp
-A new Thursday night Adult Class
-Updated the fencing room with more equipment for drills and storage
-An expanded Bronze, Silver and Gold Team schedule for the Fall Session
-A new WindyCityFencing.com website Windy City Fencing

_uacct = "UA-573517-4";urchinTracker();
_uacct = "UA-573517-2";urchinTracker();

Congratulations Tsanko! Thes changes are only the beginning and we know we are leaving the Club in great hands. At this point, I would like to take a moment to thank Neal Bader from the Menomonee Club. Without him, we never would have gotten a chance to start the Club and his enthusiasm and passion for fencing and the Menomonee Club students and parents have really enhanced our program. Thank you Neal!

As for Barry, Jeff and me, you will still see us from time to time helping out Tsanko with coaching as needed and hopefully getting to spend a little more time fencing with kids which is still a passion for all three of us. However, all future inquires regarding the program should be directed to Tsanko at tzaka_sport_2000@yahoo.com.

In closing, we want to thank each of you again for all your support these past four years. This has truly been one of the greatest experiences of our lives and watching the kids develop over the past four years is something we will never forget and will always cherish. We wish you all the best and thanks again for everything!

Warmest Regards,

Josh, Barry and Jeff

Fencing in 2007
One of only six sports participating in every modern Olympics, fencing requires speed, timing, tactics and lightning-fast reflexes to win the duel of armed combat. Athletes compete in three types of swords - foil, epee and sabre - in this fast and emotionally charged sport.
The Arnold Fencing Classic is a newer event in the Arnold Sports Festival. Over the past two decades, the Arnold Sports Festival has become the largest multi-sports festival in the nation welcoming over 132,000 attendees and 17,000 athletes including 14 Olympic sports from around the world competing in martial arts, gymnastics, bodybuilding, fencing, cheerleading, 5K pump & run, powerlifting and more. Ivy League Fencing

Columbia unbeaten at Ivy Championship

Columbia’s men and women’s fencing teams emerged from the first day of the second annual Ivy League Championships with perfect records. Sweeping through Yale, Brown, and in the women’s case, Cornell, Columbia was primed for major head-to-head confrontations Sunday, February 25, in the second and final day of the Ivy Championships.

En Garde!

CCS is home to many talented students: actors, musicians, scientists, artists — and fencers! Students Lane Lubell and Samantha Perry travelled to the University of New Hampshire last weekend to participate in the national “Sword in the Snow” tournament as part of fencing’s Super Youth Circuit. Sam fenced in the youth 10 (Y10) women’s epee division, in which she placed first and received the gold medal. Lane fenced in the Y10 men’s epee class, placing second and receiving the silver medal for his event.

Fencers who placed in the top 40% of their event earned national ranking points which the United States Fencing Association (USFA) uses to rank and seed fencers for all tournaments including Summer Nationals. This year, Nationals will be held in Miami from June 29-July 8, and both Sam and Lane have already qualified! Both Sam and Lane fence for Windy City Fencing and are on the club’s Silver A team. Sam has been fencing for almost two years and Lane has been fencing for almost three years.

“Sword in the Snow” was the second big tournament for both fencers this season. In December, they fenced in Y10 mixed epee competition at the Chicago RYC at the Chicago Athletic Association. Sam took first place with the gold and Lane took second place with the silver. An RYC is a regional youth circuit tournament. RYC results qualify fencers for events at Summer Nationals and the North American Cup (NAC) tournament.
The NAC will be held in Tucson in April, and Sam and Lane will both be fencing in that tournament as well.
