As you know some of our Silver and Bronze memberscompeted this week at a Super Youth tournament in Louisville.
All the kids did a great job and did their best.
Windy City Fencing dominated the competition by winning 2 gold medals in both Y12 events. Mason Speta took first in Y12 Woman’s and Sam Perry followed up with a 3rd place finish.
Dante LaVia won the Y12 Men’s events, as well as a Bronze medal in Y 14.
Mason Speta came in 3rd in the Y14 Woman’s
In Y10 epée the Silver medal went to August Malueg and theBronze was won by Arpad Neale
One of the directors of the event made a comment praising both the competitors as well as their parents for really acting as a teem and supporting one an other. It was clear that not only did Windy City dominate the competition; we were also the heart of the social aspect of the event. It seems at each event the number of fencers from other clubs that seem to be hanging out in the windy city circle grows.

En Garde!
CCS is home to many talented students: actors, musicians, scientists, artists — and fencers! Students Lane Lubell and Samantha Perry travelled to the University of New Hampshire last weekend to participate in the national “Sword in the Snow” tournament as part of fencing’s Super Youth Circuit. Sam fenced in the youth 10 (Y10) women’s epee division, in which she placed first and received the gold medal. Lane fenced in the Y10 men’s epee class, placing second and receiving the silver medal for his event.
Fencers who placed in the top 40% of their event earned national ranking points which the United States Fencing Association (USFA) uses to rank and seed fencers for all tournaments including Summer Nationals. This year, Nationals will be held in Miami from June 29-July 8, and both Sam and Lane have already qualified! Both Sam and Lane fence for Windy City Fencing and are on the club’s Silver A team. Sam has been fencing for almost two years and Lane has been fencing for almost three years.
“Sword in the Snow” was the second big tournament for both fencers this season. In December, they fenced in Y10 mixed epee competition at the Chicago RYC at the Chicago Athletic Association. Sam took first place with the gold and Lane took second place with the silver. An RYC is a regional youth circuit tournament. RYC results qualify fencers for events at Summer Nationals and the North American Cup (NAC) tournament.
The NAC will be held in Tucson in April, and Sam and Lane will both be fencing in that tournament as well.
